AmeriCorps Member Position Details

 

Schedule: Full Time Hours Mon- Fri          


Gross Living Allowance:  $727.00  paid twice a month to cover basic expenses during your term. Received twice a month. Amount is pretax.

 

Education Award: $6,345.00 (1700hr) / $4,441.50 (1200hr)  - Money for College and Trade School: The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is offered to individuals who complete a term of service and can be used to pay for a range of educational expenses, like repaying qualified student loans or future tuition payments. You can earn up to 2 Full Time Education awards while serving up to 4 service terms.


Health Care: Individual Health Care for those not currently covered received while serving in AmeriCorps. No Cost to Member

 

Childcare: Provided to those who are income eligible in order to cover the cost of childcare


Loan Deferment & Interest Forbearance: Individuals in approved AmeriCorps positions are eligible for forbearance for most federally guaranteed student loans. In addition, interest payments that accrue during service may be eligible for repayment by AmeriCorps. Generally, the Trust pays all interest for members serving full time who complete their term of service.

Position Summary:

The member will increase the capacity of the school by providing academic assistance and/or service-learning activities to students within grades K-12  who are identified as at risk, economically disadvantaged and/or have special or exceptional needs. Each student will receive one-on one and/or small group instruction in before, during and after-school programs for 3-5 times per week for 30-90 minutes a session. As a result, students will demonstrate improved academic performance in literacy and/or math as measured by pre/post standardized test and/or improved academic engagement as measured by pre/post rubrics.


AmeriCorps members serving in schools could participate in any of the following activities: 

  • Increase the capacity of the school to provided targeted, one-on-one and small group instruction in math and/or literacy for students who are not grade-level proficient
  • Utilize the curriculum-based instruction STEM to educate students in four individual disciplines -science, technology, engineering and mathematics as well as integrated projects to be used to support both the academic standards and/or the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Standards.
  • Provide intensive progress monitoring to help inform and refine instruction and intervention for students who fail to meet proficiency benchmarks in curriculum-based assessments or standardized tests.
  • Provide and support Credit Recovery opportunities for students who are at risk for retention or drop out to meet promotion or graduation requirements.
  • Deliver targeted Standardized Test preparation and remediation to students whose PSSA and Keystone Exam performance indicates a lack of proficiency
  • Provide homework help and study skills instruction for students through before and after school programs
  • Utilize a combination of interventions provided by the school staff to deliver individualized remediation and support to struggling students identified by Title 1 or Special Education assessments/screenings in Reading and/or Math
  • Utilize a combination of interventions provided by the school staff to deliver individualized remediation and support to struggling students identified by Title 1 or Special Education assessments/screenings in Reading and/or Mathematics

Additional activities could be assigned by the host site and will be provided on the member's service description upon acceptance.
