AmeriCorps Tutoring Position Details


Schedule: Full Time Hours Monday - Friday: May include a few weekend days during the term of service for special service projects or activities promoting civic engagement.          

Gross Living Allowance:  $860 paid on the 15th and last day of each month of enrollment.  Amount is pretax. 


                     $14,620 Gross Living Allowance for 1300 hour position (34 Weeks)

                   $18,920 Gross Living Allowance for 1700 hour position (44 Weeks)

Definition of Living Allowance:  money distributed to individuals to meet basic living needs.  Living allowance is not considered money earned as during employment.  Members are not classified as employees.  Therefore members are not subject to employee benefits or eligible for unemployment.  A living allowance may not affect other benefits such as social security, retirement, or other assistance benefits.

TERM LENGTH - Ongoing Enrollment Beginning August 22, 2022

                                                     8.5 months for 1300 hour position

                                                     11 months for 1700 hour position


Education Award:       $4,546   - 1300 Hour Position

                                                $6,495 -   1700 Hour Position

The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is offered to individuals who complete a term of service and can be used to pay for a range of education/training expenses.  Examples include: repaying qualified student loans, future tuition payments, skill training programs and more. You can earn up to 2 Full Time Education awards while serving up to 4 service terms.

Health Care: Individual Health Care for those not currently covered received while serving in AmeriCorps. No Cost to Member


Childcare: Provided to those who are income eligible in order to cover the cost of childcare while serving AmeriCorps hours.

Loan Deferment & Interest Forbearance: Student loan payments are scheduled to begin on September 1, 2022.  Individuals in approved AmeriCorps positions are eligible for forbearance for most federally guaranteed student loans. In addition, interest payments that accrue during service may be eligible for repayment by AmeriCorps. Generally, the Trust pays all interest for members serving full time hours who complete their term of service.

Position Summary:

The member will increase the capacity of the school by providing academic assistance and/or service-learning activities to students within grades K-12  who are identified as at risk, economically disadvantaged and/or have barriers or exceptional needs. Each student will receive one-on one and/or small group instruction in before, during and after-school programs for 3-5 times per week for 30-90 minutes a session. As a result, students will demonstrate improved academic performance in literacy and/or math as measured by pre/post standardized test and/or improved academic engagement as measured by pre/post rubrics.

AmeriCorps members serving in schools could participate in any of the following activities: 

  • Increase the capacity of the school to provided targeted, one-on-one and small group instruction in math and/or literacy for students who are not grade-level proficient
  • Utilize the curriculum-based instruction STEM to educate students in four individual disciplines -science, technology, engineering and mathematics as well as integrated projects to be used to support both the academic standards and/or the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Standards.
  • Provide intensive progress monitoring to help inform and refine instruction and intervention for students who fail to meet proficiency benchmarks in curriculum-based assessments or standardized tests.
  • Provide and support Credit Recovery opportunities for students who are at risk for retention or drop out to meet promotion or graduation requirements.
  • Deliver targeted Standardized Test preparation and remediation to students whose PSSA and Keystone Exam performance indicates a lack of proficiency
  • Provide homework help and study skills instruction for students through before and after school programs
  • Utilize a combination of interventions provided by the school staff to deliver individualized remediation and support to struggling students identified by Title 1 or Special Education assessments/screenings in Reading and/or Math
  • Utilize a combination of interventions provided by the school staff to deliver individualized remediation and support to struggling students identified by Title 1 or Special Education assessments/screenings in Reading and/or Mathematics

Additional activities could be assigned by the host site and will be provided on the member's service description upon acceptance.
